The Single Most Important Quality to Look for When Selecting a Legal Software Provider

Over the last 10 years, I’ve often written about the importance of ensuring that your legal software providers have taken measures to secure their systems – so you might naturally expect me to say that security is the single most important quality to look for when choosing a legal software provider. And if we’ve ever met, I’ve probably spoken about the need for solutions that are intuitive and easy-to-use, or provide access to information that can enable informed, data-driven decisions. Yes, undoubtedly – all of these factors should be taken into consideration when selecting a legal software provider. And in fact, at Lecorpio, we pride ourselves on delivering these capabilities.

So what is it then? What is the single most important quality to look for when choosing a legal software provider?

It’s TRUST.

Due to the complexity of data, changing rules, human interaction and the potential for erroneous mistakes – issues will undoubtedly arise. It’s not a matter of if a problem will arise, it’s a matter of when.  So it’s essential that you can trust your software providers to stand by you, and to remediate any issues that arise – regardless of how the problem was created.

I’ve heard of software providers blaming their clients for issues – which is simply unacceptable. Even if an issue is created by the client – the software provider should be there to fix any problem that occurs, without placing blame.

I’ve also seen instances where legal software companies do not treat their clients as partners, and sell them services that they don’t need, are not transparent about their pricing, nickel and dime for small requests or additional users, or play games with currency conversion rates. Again – simply unacceptable. Your software provider should be treating you like a partner, always doing what is best for you – even if it means sacrificing additional revenue.

I still think that security, ease-of-use, and access to actionable information should be drivers in making any software decision, but when it comes to legal software solutions in particular, I believe that selecting a provider who you can trust, and will be there to support you every step of the way trumps all.
